They’re nostalgic, instantly recognisable and unapologetically bold – everything a great machine should be.

On Wednesday 24th June, myself, Kate Valentine from Southern Manufacturing & Electronics, and Oliver Tucknott from Advanced Engineering had the opportunity to attend Amada’s Open House at their impressive headquarters in Kidderminster.

From the moment we arrived, it felt like an Amada takeover. Spread across three large buildings, the site perfectly reflects the scale of the business and its commitment to manufacturing excellence. After a warm welcome from the team, we were met by our tour guide, Matt Hall, who would spend the afternoon showing us around the facility.

Walking through the headquarters, it was impossible to miss the company’s Japanese heritage, with subtle design features and displays throughout the building paying tribute to where the business began. Matt explained the history of Amada, founded in Japan with the philosophy of “Growing Together With Our Customers” – a motto that has remained at the heart of the company throughout its global success.

As we headed to the demo area and watched these impressive machines in action, it was difficult to comprehend that the foundations of Amada were laid with a single fire damaged lathe, salvaged from a former munitions factory in post war Japan. Standing in one of three vast buildings filled with cutting-edge technology, the contrast between where the company started and where it is today couldn’t have been greater.

Our first stop in the demo room was the impressive TK II 3015 EU in action. Rather than being a laser cutter itself, the TK II 3015 EU is an intelligent automated unloading and sorting system that works alongside Amada’s fibre laser machines. Once components have been cut, the system automatically identifies, lifts, sorts and stacks each finished part with remarkable precision, eliminating the need for time-consuming manual unloading while protecting delicate surfaces from damage.

For the demonstration, the machine was producing Amada’s 80th Anniversary logo, and what immediately stood out wasn’t just the speed, but the smoothness of the entire process. Every movement felt controlled and deliberate, with parts being handled confidently and placed perfectly. It was one of those demonstrations where you quickly appreciate how much time, labour and consistency can be gained through intelligent automation.

Another machine we saw close up was the REGIUS 3015 AJ e, one of Amada’s flagship fibre laser cutting machines. Designed for high speed, high accuracy sheet metal processing, the machine combines full linear drive technology with intelligent monitoring systems that continuously check nozzle condition, beam quality and cutting performance, automatically correcting issues before they become problems. The result is exceptional cutting accuracy, minimal downtime and complete confidence in production. Watching the REGIUS 3015 AJ e at work, there was a real sense of assurance in everything it did. The machine wasn’t rushed or aggressive; it simply performed with quiet confidence, producing incredibly clean, consistent cuts while making complex technology look effortless.

The next part of the tour took us into another building where pre-owned machines are completely refurbished before being returned to the market. For manufacturers looking to invest on a smaller budget, it’s an excellent option. What impressed us most was the level of detail that goes into each refurbishment. Components are stripped back, worn parts replaced, surfaces sanded, repaired where necessary and fully repainted until the machines look almost factory fresh. Unless you were told otherwise, you’d struggle to distinguish many of them from new.

It was also fascinating to learn just how much of each machine Amada manufactures in house. Rather than relying heavily on third party suppliers, many of the key components are designed and built by Amada themselves. This gives the company complete control over quality, accuracy, reliability and future innovation while ensuring every machine meets the same exceptionally high standards.

The third and final building focused on training, housing a dedicated workshop where engineers receive hands on instruction directly from the Amada team. Rather than learning solely in a classroom, trainees work on the machines themselves, gaining practical experience in servicing, maintenance, diagnostics and operation. Having this level of manufacturer led training not only develops confidence and technical ability but also ensures customers benefit from engineers who understand the equipment inside and out.

The entire Amada team made us feel incredibly welcome throughout the day. Considering temperatures had climbed to a sweltering 38°C, full credit has to go to Matt Hall, whose enthusiasm and knowledge never wavered from start to finish.

As we left the site, one thing was abundantly clear. Eight decades after the company was founded, Amada’s philosophy of “Growing Together With Our Customers” is far more than a slogan. It’s something that’s reflected in every machine, every employee and every part of the business.

Wednesday 24th June 2026 There’s something about Amada machines.
