Machining vs Casting
Machining from solid billet can be best when accuracy, finish and fast turnaround are important. It needs little tooling, so it is well suited to low-volume work and parts with critical dimensions. The disadvantages are higher material waste, longer machining times on large parts and higher cost for large production runs.
Casting is often better for complex shapes, heavy sections and higher quantities. It can reduce material waste and lower the cost per part once patterns or moulds are made. However, casting usually has longer lead times and tooling costs. Cast parts may still need CNC machining afterwards to finish faces, holes, threads and tight tolerances.
In practice, both methods are often combined: a casting gives the near-net shape, then CNC machining finishes the critical features accurately.
