3D Wax Printing for Investment Casting Prototypes
3D wax printing is a rapid method of producing accurate wax patterns directly from CAD data for investment casting prototypes. Instead of making aluminium or steel wax-injection tooling, the pattern is built layer by layer using a castable wax or wax-like material. The printed wax is then used like a conventional pattern: it is finished if needed, attached to runners and a sprue, coated with ceramic to form a shell, melted or burned out, and replaced with molten metal to create the casting.

For prototype work, the main advantages are speed, lower initial cost, and design flexibility. It avoids hard tooling, supports fast design changes, and can produce complex details, undercuts, and low-volume parts that may be difficult or uneconomical to tool conventionally. Because the part is still made through the investment casting route, the prototype can be representative of the intended production material and process.
Considerations
Key considerations include surface finish, dimensional allowance, pattern strength, and clean burnout. Layer lines may require dressing, shrinkage must be allowed for in the CAD model, and delicate features need careful handling during shell building. 3D wax printing is best suited to one-off castings, development samples, and small batches; for high production volumes, conventional wax tooling may still be more economical.
