Matta Labs Ltd
About us
Matta is creating industrial AI for factories. We are a group of engineers, scientists, and builders developing manufacturing foundation models (MFMs) and a general-purpose manufacturing OS to improve the sustainability of manufacturing today and to unlock the unimaginable technologies of tomorrow.
We have two core product offerings which are accessible through Matta OS:
Blue - our generalist computer vision AI for automatic defect detection, set up in 24 hours, to reduce waste and improve quality from the first day of installation.
Grey - our causality-driven AI for closed-loop control to automate machinery throughout the factory to improve yield and unlock new design possibilities.
Matta was founded at the University of Cambridge by a team of AI and manufacturing engineers with experience from MIT, Imperial, Google X, BBC R&D, and Microsoft. We are hiring across engineering, AI research, and business development!

Backend Engineer
We’re looking for a Backend Engineer to help design, build, and scale our manufacturing OS. You’ll work directly on our FastAPI-based backend with the challenging task of designing highly-scalable system architectures to handles 1000s of real-time data streams across 100s of manufacturing processes. What makes this especially challenging is generalising across different use cases and customer environments. We need to be super flexible without compromising on performance and code sanity – from beer bottle factories to aerospace components. You’ll juggle back and forth between: 1) creating API endpoints for our edge devices, 2) improving the efficiency of database queries, 3) integrating new features in our frontend dashboard 4) plus more. This isn’t your typical dev gig – expect to work hard and collaborate with an exceptional team of top engineers, scientists, and builders, all obsessed with embodied AI reshaping the manufacturing world.
Frontend Engineer
We’re looking for a Frontend Engineer to own, build, and scale the face of our manufacturing OS. You’ll work directly on our Vue.js-based frontend, with the fun and challenging task of designing interfaces for the future of manufacturing, whilst also making internal tools / demos for showcasing and testing our AI. You’ll juggle back and forth between proper engineering around efficiency of WebRTC and WebSockets, to creating new user experiences and interfaces for AI visualisations and data, and prototyping designs faster than our CTO can make cups of tea for the team (btw the whole team can juggle… so get practicing). This isn’t your typical dev gig – expect to work hard and collaborate with an exceptional team of top engineers, scientists, and builders, all obsessed with embodied AI reshaping the manufacturing world.
Edge Systems Engineer
We want you to turn capabilities into a rock-solid, shippable product: an industrial “Matta Box” that ingests high-bandwidth video, processes it locally, and syncs with the cloud. You’ll design, build, optimise and productise our edge compute and machine vision pipeline and hardware, keeping thousands of deployed units patched and humming along. One week, you might be figuring out how to best mount our cameras in the majority of factories; the next, you’re optimising the frame acquisition code running on our Matta boxes. We’d love for you to live and breathe productising and optimising the Matta solution that gets deployed to customer sites – everything from packaging to lighting, mounting, cameras, boxes, and the code that ties it all together. You’ll shape how we productise today’s solutions so we can scale. Expect to work hard and collaborate with an exceptional team of top engineers, scientists, and builders, all obsessed with embodied AI reshaping the manufacturing world.
Forward Deployed Engineer
We’re hiring Forward Deployed Engineers to lead the charge on implementing and operationalising our AI solutions in factories. You’ll be the person who makes our tech real for our customers – and makes sure it actually works. This is a full-stack role! You’ll work across the entire customer journey, doing the jobs of multiple people and specialties in one: engaging prospective customers, qualifying leads, scoping problems, deploying solutions, and fixing things when they break. One week, you’ll be the face of Matta, responsible for engaging with engineers and technicians at trade shows, bringing in leads alongside our CEO. The next, you’ll be deep in a factory, perhaps figuring out why our system is picking up too much static interference, or how to optimise the lighting to improve our images. You’ll roll up your sleeves and get problems sorted – collaborating with our backend, frontend, and research teams to ship fixes and redesign product features based on customer feedback.
Special Projects
We’re searching for someone to join Special Projects, who will be at the heart of everything we do - steering long-term strategy, supporting fundraising efforts, and helping close customer deals. This role is pivotal to our success, and we’re looking for someone who is ready to partner closely with our CEO, to bounce ideas around and turn them into reality. This is probably our most important hire and you should be up for learning about and diving into anything. This might even include engineering tasks. Clear and effective communication will be at the heart of your role. We’re looking for someone who can distil the team’s often technical, complex, and sometimes chaotic/scatter-brain ideas into concise, polished points that resonate with diverse audiences. This skill will be especially critical when engaging with large corporate partners, where a professional and business-oriented communication style is essential.
Machine Learning Engineer
We’re looking for an ML Engineer to join us in creating a brand-new class of foundation models designed specifically for manufacturing. You’ll get to tackle exciting challenges like: - Inventing new capabilities, such as building models that understand causality – not just predicting what went wrong, but explaining why (e.g., “The temperature here was too high, mate. Lower it in this spot and you’re sorted!”). - Boosting data efficiency and robustness to achieve top-notch accuracy with minimal data. Think teaching our models to learn from a handful of examples and transfer their smarts from one manufacturing setup to another like seasoned pros. Oh, and here’s the kicker: all of this needs to work in real-time and run on low compute systems. To give you an idea of the variety you’ll be diving into, one day you might be monitoring beer bottles, and the next, solving challenges with aerospace components. It’s a proper mix making life fun!
